Black Beans are used a lot in my cooking. While I was cooking the sweet black bean dish (콩자반), I have decided to take some bean water for dying fabric. The result was pretty good.


Making Sweet Black Bean Dish (콩자반)
1- Rinse and Soak beans (depending on the dryness of beans, soak for one ~ several hours)
2- Add water and boil until beans get soften, making sure of enough liquid.
3- Take out bean water for dyeing and continue cooking beans to make the sweet black bean dish. (if I am not dyeing, I would not take out any liquid and continue to cook)
4- Since liquid was taken out for dyeing, add extra water in the pot of softened beans and boil until beans are all cooked.
5- When beans are all cooked, add sugar, boil for 30 minutes making sure of enough of liquid, add soy sauce, and boil until liquid becomes syrupy and about 1TBS of liquid left.
(*for 1 cup of dried beans, I use about 3TBS Soy sauce and 3 TBS Sugar)
6-Garnish with roasted sesame seeds and eat.

Dyeing

1- Put clean fabric into hot Black bean water (see #3 above) (*Boiling would give better result, I think)
2- Let it sit for 1~ several hours to dye.

*I didn’t use any extra mordants in most case, but the pre-treating in Alum bath seemed to give a better result and also made the color bluer.
